The game ended in move 17th after Gelfand miscalculate a combination and has to lost a significant amount of material which is good enough for Anand to convert into a full point.

Newsweek (May 14, 2012) : Erasing Kasparov

I'm watching the Live broadcast of the 3rd game of Anand - Gelfand World Championship Match online . After Gelfand made his 18th move 18...Qa5,  while waiting for Anand's reply, i decide to have my dinner first.

While having my dinner, i glanced trough the latest copy of Newsweek (14th May 2012) and shockingly found an article about Kasparov! The title is "Erasing Kasparov" by Masha Green. The article is a 6 pages column with photos!

The article tell about Kasparov fight against Vladimir Putin who is about to be inaugurated as Russia's president - again ?!

"Faqih vs Deputy Prime Minister"

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin officiate the opening of  Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Jelutong yesterday. A photo of DPM  with National Youth chess player - Muhammad Faqih Aminuddin with a giant chess board appeared in Utusan Malaysia today.

At the photo caption, it stated that Muhammad Faqih Aminuddin  won The World Youth Chess Championship 2010  in Greece which i think is not accurate. Faqih in fact was place 102nd in the Under 8 Open section (click here). I'm not mentioning this to discredit Faqih achievement because i know Faqih is a talented boy but i found that sometimes newspaper take for granted certain fact like this .

A 'date' with Lewis Chessmen

I visited The British Museum on 30th April 2012. The main purpose is of course to see the famous  Lewis chessmen. The Lewis Chessmen  are a group of 78  12th-century chess pieces  which are discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

I've always found about this famous chess artifact written in chess literature books for e.g. The Oxford Companion to Chess which is a reference book on chess written by David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld.

A visit to London Chess Center

Last month yours truly visited the famous  London Chess Center which is the Europe’s biggest chess shop and chess resource. The original location of London Chess Center was at  Euston Road but it has close its doors in  2010 after 18 years due to the termination of the lease on the property. It was relocated at  Baker Street, London. Although the  chess center has moved from its original place, the surrounding of the chess store didn't change much in my opinion.

Being a chess lover, it was my childhood dream  to visit this famous chess shop. I knew this shop since 1992 when i bought my first chess magazine - The British Chess Magazine. The magazine always has an advertisement about this chess shop. During the pre- internet era,  chess information come in form of  chess books and magazines and London Chess Center always has the biggest chess books/magazine/ equipment for sale.

It was an outstanding feeling  when my childhood dream  come true. Nowadays i already have a lot of chess books and latest chess information/theory  which is easily obtain from the internet. Besides of buying chess books, I bought  chess pens, New In Chess Magazines, London Chess Classic 2011 bulletin, chess set and  board which has a London chess center label on it  to remind me that i've been at this famous chess shop :)

Its time to wake up and the time is now..... (revisited)

Recently we read about Najib Wahab decision to quit his full time chess job and  return to 'normal' job.  In his blog post - 'Of Reviewing My Status', Najib mention that in 2003 he made a 'spicy' comments about Malaysia chess in Yahoo Group. For those who missed the article, you can read it below.

Chess in Malaysia has not changed much in the past 15 years or so.
Once a while, we will have World Class Tournaments being held here in
KL, the latest being the World Age Group Championship that was
organized during the middle of last year. The only improvement that I
see is that we now have a chess office in Wilayah Complex, run and
managed by those who have the time to devote on chess. These are
voluntary individuals who love the game more than just playing it,
individuals who envisioned a future in chess, individuals who
continue to try to develop and promote the game where others have
failed… or given up. It never cease to amaze me that
their `voluntary' status has not changed in 15 years especially for
Hamid Majid who has been doing it – voluntarily – for all the years
that I have known him…
