Mok Tze Meng our new International Master !

After 9 years from his first IM norm at the Wah Seong IM Tournament in Penang, Mok Tze Meng (photo right) has officially be crowned as our 5th International Master (IM) by world chess governing body - FIDE.

Personally i believed Mok can get this title earlier if he play in more international tournaments ( with norm possibilities) . Anyway, this must be a good motivation for the Mo(k)dern Guru to start the new year. I hope Mok will not stop here and aim for the Grandmaster title !

Congratulation IM Mok Tze Meng !

Below is an interesting excerpt from the article regarding Carlsen opinion about playing against computer :-

..."It's more an analytical tool," Carlsen said "Playing against the computer regularly would mean that I would lose more often than I won and I don't think that would be very helpful for my confidence"...

2nd DATCC Team League Round 8 Preview

Standing after Round 7

1. Team AU 27 points
2. Caviaga 25 points
3. Pricewaterhouse 17.5 points
4. Nusa Mahkota Chess Club 16 points
5. X-Factor 15 points
6. Storm Warriors 10.5 points
7. 17 Chess Club 9.5 points
8. Eon Bank Berhad 9.5 points
9.DATCC 7 points
10. Tan & Tan 2.5 points

Round 8 Preview

EON Bank Berhad vs Nusa Mahkota Chess Club
This match is more important to Nusa's then EON. Nusa Mahkota with Pricewaterhouse and X-Factor is the main contender for the 3rd placing. Pricewater held the advantage with 17.5 points followed by Nusa (16 points) and X- Factor ( 15 points).

The highlight of this match is of course on then top two board where Nusa Mahkota will fight against "former" members in the 1st DATCC League - Norilhamuddin and Aziz Shukor. However both team will fight fairly to earn their points.

Prediction : Nusa Mahkota win 3-1

X-Factor - Storm Warriors
As i mentioned before, X - Factor will try their best to earn maximum points left to fight for the third place . The strenght of the team is of course on the 1st board - IM elect Mok Tze Meng and their 4th board - Lim Zhouren. I think Storm will have chance to get points on board 2 and 3.

Prediction: X-Factor win 2.5-1.5

DATCC vs Tan & Tan

Both team will try their best to avoid to finish in the last place . However DATCC is more or less safe because they are 4.5 points ahead and with Justin Ong playing on board 4, they don't have to worry much.

Prediction: Draw 2-2

17 Chess Club vs Pricewaterhouse

Pricewaterhouse will try to get maximum points to ease their job before meeting the top team - AU in the last round. If they falter in this round, chance are high that Nusa and X-factor will over passed them for the third place. 17's best chance is on their first board - Kamaluddin Yusof.

Prediction: Pricewaterhouse win 3-1

Caviaga vs Team AU
The highlight of the round or perhaps the league!. The results between the top two leader in this round will be crucial to decide the champion of the 2nd League. Although AU has two points advantage over Caviaga, the former has a relatively difficult task compare to Caviaga in the final round where AU will meet Pricewater and Caviaga will have an easy task against the tail ender - Tan & Tan.

Prediction: Draw 2-2

Chess Puzzle (14) Solution !

Black to move and win !

The answer for puzzle (14) is 1...e2+ and white is force to prevent the e-pawn from queening with 2.Nxe2 then come the excellent waiting move 2...Bb6! actually 2...Bc5! and 2...Be3! is equally winning 3.h4 Bc5! Black brilliantly play the waiting moves with his bishop along the g1-a7 diaganol. The idea is after white has exhausted with his pawns move, he has to move his knight. 4.h5 Bb6 5.Nxf4 5.Ng1 Bxg1 6. Kxg1 Ke3 7. Kg2 Ke2 8. Kg1 Kxf3 and black will swept all black's pawns. 5...gxf4 6. g5 hxg5 7. h6 Bc5 8. h7 Bd4 and black bishop stop white from safely queen his h-pawn .

Blunder Blues from Sibu

Today i received sms from the same person who yesterday sent me his brilliancy . However unlike yesterday's game , today i received a position where the sender- Ismail Ahmad (Kuala Lumpur) blunder heavily against the top seed - NM Ng Tze Han (Penang) in a totally winning position.

Ismail Ahmad - NM Ng Tze Han
Malaysian Interstate, Round 5, 26-12.09
White to move
White is totally winning. He is three pawn up and in a commanding position. The problem is he has less then two minutes left. 1. e7 Qxe7 2.Qxe7? according to Ismail , in time trouble he missed 2. Qg6+! and black can resign after 2... Kf8 3. Ra6! and white's rook joint the attack. Black best try is 3...Rd8+ but he still lose after 4. Kc3 Bd4+ 5. Kb3 Qg7 6. Qf5+ Ke8 and 7. g5 or 7. Re6+ win easily. Actually after the text move- 2.Qxe7, Ismail is still winning, after a couple of moves the players came into the position below with white to move...

White (Ismail) mantain his three pawns advantage and is still clearly winning. However he had less then a minute. According to Ismail 1. Rc6 or 1.g5 followed by 2.Bh5 is simply winning, unfortunately he choose 1.Rh6??
and after 1...f3! White will lost his rook on h6 or his bishop on e2 0-1 Ismail mentioned that the game finish around 12 midnight and he couldn't sleep thinking about the blunder.
