Chess Puzzle (17)

Try find the best move for black. If you want to test your tactical ability, try it on your own first before asking for assistance... especially from your chess computer program.

The position below arise  from one of my recent Internet Chess Club(ICC) blitz ( 15 minute) game. Although i was down in material, my piece is all working with full cylinder. Furthermore, white`s king is doing a `dangerous  walk in the park!

Secutor - Hairulov
ICC, 5 minutes blitz, 23.2.2010

Black to move !

34...Re3 !

stronger then 34...Nd6. Now black is threatening white`s queen .

35. Rxc4 if he choose to capture the rook then 35. fxe3 Qxg3+ 36. Kh1 ( 36.Kf1? lost the queen after 36...Nd2+) 36...Qh3+ 37. Kg1 Bh6 38. Rc3 (38. Bxf7+ Kg7 39. Qc3+ Kxf7) 38... Bxe3+ 39. Rxe3 Nxe3 40. Bxf7+ Kg7

35... Rxb3 36. Rxg4 Rxb5 37. Rxg6+ Bg7 37... Kh7 also ok for e.g  38. Bxf7 (38. Rg5 Rcc5 39.Rxh5+ Kg7 40.Rg5+ Kf6 41.Bb3 Rxg5 42.hxg5 Rxg5) 38... Rf5

38. Be5? the losing move. White can still offer tougher resistance with 38.Rd6 38... Rc1+?! In time trouble ( we play blitz remember!) i miss the simple  38... Rxd5!  39. Rxg7+ Kf8 40. Rg5 Ke7 41. Bf6+ Ke6)

39. Kg2 Rxd5 40. Rxg7+ Kf8 41. Rh7?? blunder . White can play for a draw with 41. Rg5 Ke7 42. Rxh5 Ke6 43. Bb2 Rxh5 44. Bxc1 Rxh4

Hoh Hjin Li- Amira Shakmina

The 2010 Women Malaysian Women Master organised by Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF)  start today at the DATCC, KL.

Below is one of the interesting game from day 1-

Hoh Hjin Li - Amira Shakmina
Game 1, Malaysian Women Master, 26.2.2010

Analysed by Hairulov and Fritz

1. e4 c5 2. Nc3 d6 3. f4 Nc6 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. Bb5 g6 6. d3 Bg7 7. O-O O-O 8. Bxc6 bxc6 9. Qe1  Bg4  Theory recommend several continuation for e.g 9...Rb8 , 9... c4 or 9... Ne8  10. Qh4 Bxf3?! I don`t like this move. Black  should wait white to play h3 first  and then only take the knight on f3. The reason is now white`s rook can join the attack on h- file because the h3 square is free.11. Rxf3

11...Qd7 12. f5 Nh5 13. g4 Bf6 14. Qh3 Bd4+ 15. Kh1 Nf6 16. Qh4 Kh8 17. Rh3 Rg8 18. Ne2 Be5 19. Bg5  19. Ng3! is stronger for e.g 19...Bxg3 20. hxg3 h5 21. g5 Nh7 22. g4  19... Rg7 20. Ng3  Bxb2
Black can set a nice trap with 20... Rag8!? 21. Bh6? g5 22. Bxg7+ Rxg7 23. Qh6 Nxg4 24. Qh5 Nf2+  21. Rf1 Be5 Black should have play 21... Rag8! threatening gxf5 and then the white`s bishop with Rxg5 22. Bh6 g5 23. Bxg7+ Rxg7 24. Qh6 Be5 and white`s queen is offside 22. Bh6 Rgg8 23. fxg6?! White miss 23. g5! Ne8 and the stunning 24. Bf8!! and black can resign 23... fxg6 24. g5 Bxg3 if  24... Ng4 White have nice combination 25. Rf7 Bg7 26. Nf5! Nf2+ 27. Qxf2 gxf5 28. g6!  25. hxg3 Ng4 26. Bf8? white missed the strong 26. Rf7! 26... h5??  blunder. Black can parry the mating threat on h7 by playing   26... e5!  The black`s queen know cover h7 and black can still survive. Now black will be mate in three.....

The Malaysian Women Master 2010 start tommorow!

The 2010 Malaysian Women Master will start tomorrow (26th February 2010) till 2nd March 2010 at the Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Centre (DATCC), Wilayah Kompleks, Kuala Lumpur . After the success of their male counterpart tournament, Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) has decide to organize this event dedicated for women players only. I hope no male player will take Najib Wahab “advice” as mentioned in his  article (read para 3 line 12-13) just to take part in this tournament.

The list of the players selected to play in this tournament has been well debated recently although the selection criteria has been announced about two months earlier. The organizer has released the final list of the players here.  I  hope the tournaments will produced many interesting games/moment as what the Malaysian Master has produced.

May the best women win !

Sumant Subramaniam - Jonathan Koh

Below is one of the interesting game from the recently concluded Malaysia- Singapore Annual Match. The game was won by Singaporean  - Jonathan Koh (photo below)  against Malaysian - Sumant Subramaniam. Both are 17 years old.

Sumant Subramaniam (2058) - Jonathan Koh (2189)
2010 Malaysia-Singapore, Game 1 (Classical) 16.2.2010

Analysed by Hairulov and Fritz

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 d6 4.d4 cxd4 5. Qxd4 Bd7 6. Bxc6 Bxc6 7. Nc3 Nf6 8. Bg5 e6 9. O-O-O Be7 10. Rhe1 O-O 11. Qd2 Qc7 12. Nd4 Rfd8 13. f3 a6 14. g4 Be8 15. h4 b5

 16. Be3?! Look like a waste of tempo. White want to push g5 but black can reply with Nh5 blockading and slowing white`s king side pawn break.  Theory recommend 16. Kb1 b4 17. Nce2 a5 18. Ng3 Rdb8 19. Nh5 Nxh5 20. gxh5 Bf8 21. Rg1 Qc8 22. Bf6 g6 23. f4 16... b4 17. Nce2 d5 18. e5 Nd7! 18... Qxe5?? 19. Bf4 and black`s queen is trap

19. f4 Nb6 Black threatening 20...Nc4 next

20. b3 a5 21. f5 a4

Who`s faster? white`s kingside attack or black`s queensiede attack?

 22. Kb1 axb3 23. cxb3 Of course taking with the a-pawn 23. axb3 ?? would commit sucide after 27...Qa7

23... Qxe5! Black`s take the bull by it horn!

24. Bf4 Qe4+ 25. Nc2 ? 25. Ka1 is the correct move however black still have the advantage if he can find- 25...Nc4!! 26. bxc4 dxc4

25... e5 25... d4! is stronger. The idea is to (i) create room for black`s queen to retreat and attack via the a-file (ii) use the d5 square as a strong outpost for black`s knight 26. Nexd4 Qb7 27. Nxb4 Qa7

26. Ned4

Black stll have the upperhand after 26. Nc1 exf4!

26... exd4 ?? with this move Black loses his initiative 26... exf4 !! 27.Rxe4 dxe4 and black have many deadly threat for e.g (i) Nd5-Nc3+ (ii) e3 etc...

27.Rxe4?? Unfortunately, white return the favour. White win after 27. Bc7!  for e.g 27...Qxg4 28. Bxd8 Rxd8 29. Rxe7 clearly winning for white

27... dxe4  Black is quenless but as Izz Saifuddin told me, it`s not about how many  piece do you have but how many square do you control . In this case black`s control over  the d5 and c3 square gave him winning advantage.

28. Bc7 Nd5! Black doesn`t mind giving his rook.

29. Bxd8 Rxd8 30. Re1 e3 White`s can`t do anything to safe the position .

31. Qh2 Bc5 32. Rd1 A mistake but white`s is lost anyway.

32... Nc3+ 33. Kc1 d3 0-1  White`s resign .

Possible continuation is 34. Nxe3 Bxe3+ 35. Rd2 Ra8 36. Qe5 Nxa2+ 37. Kd1 Nc3+ 38. Kc1 Ra1+ 39. Kb2 Rb1# checkmate
