WGM Irene Sukandar in Uzbekistan

I just noticed that Indonesian WGM - Irene Kharisma Sukandar (right) is playing in The 4th International tournament dedicated to the memory of GM Georgi Agzamov (1954-1986). The tournament is being held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan  from 22nd March to 1st April 2010.

I chat with her yesterday,  and discuss about the current tournament which she is playing with her fellow countrymen - GM Susanto Megaranto. According to her, her performance was not that encouraging so far (2 out of 4) but she hope to strike back in the remaining rounds. All the best Irene!  ( Irene won round 5 against Bobur Ohunov - way to go Irene!)

Former World Champion - Vasily Smyslov Died

Former World Champion - Vasily Smyslov 89,  from Russia died yesterday. Smyslov was World Champion from 1957-1958 defeating another legandary and former World Champion - Mikhail Botvinnik. Both battle in three World Championship Final were Botvinnik won two out of three .

Smyslov probably not as  famous as several World Champ like Kasparov, Fischer, Karpov, Spassky or legendary players  before him like Alekhine or Capablanca. However i personally had a special respect for him because when i studied  in Malacca during the early 90`s, i once borrowed a chess book from my school library titled -  125 Selected Games - a collection of Smyslov best games. During those day when chess books is hard to find - especially for student like me who has not enough money to spend beside my school expenses, i really read his  book trougly, from cover to cover. Even my school teammates sometimes called me Smyslov :)

Among former World Champion  who he has beat in the past  is players like  Tal, Fischer, Spassky, Karpov, Kasparov among others.

Smyslov played the first World Championship match  against  Botvinnik in 1954. The match ended in a draw after 24 games and  Botvinnik as the defending Champion  retained his title. Smyslov once again win the Candidate final and got the right to challange Botvinik in 1957 World Championship Final. This time Smyslov won quite convincingly. In 1958, Botvinnik got the right to challange Smyslov in the World Championship final and Botvinnik manage to win it.

One interesting fact about the three Smyslov-Botvinnik World Championship matches ( 1954,1957 and 1958) , Smyslov has won 18 games to Botvinnik's 17 (with 34 draws), and yet he was only champion for a year.

In 1983, at the age of 62, Smyslov create a sensation in chess world  when he advance to  Candidates' Final beating young players such as Robert Hubner (quarterfinal) and Zoltan Ribli (Semifinal). However in the final, he lost to the young - Garry Kasparov who proceed to play Karpov in the World Championship final in 1985.

From the Smyslov`s book - 125 Selected which i had read in the past , i found that he is an  expert  on endgame  and his style of play is his chess pieces always work  harmony with each other.

GM Ziaur Rahman - Nor Ilhamuddin

The focus of round 1 of the  3rd DATCC Team League is of course on GM Ziaur Rahman (2558) from Bangladesh. He  now act as a GM Resident in Malaysia and offer  local chess coaching and training services. In this league, he play on board 1 for team - Think Big,  along with  formidable line - up - IM Mok Tze Meng (2415), Yeoh Li Tian (1971), NWM Tan Li Ting (1879). In round 1,  the team really  score BIG (4-0) against  their  opponent  - 17 Chess Club. I guess many team will suffer the same fate in later rounds.

Below are the GM first `victim` in this league - with all due respect to my great friend - Nor Ilhamuddin who by the way has create a new chess blog  which i follow passionately.

GM Ziaur Rahman (2558) vs Nor Ilhamuddin (2040)
3rd DATCC Team League, Round 1, 23.3.2010

Analysed by Hairulov and Fritz

1. d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3. c4 c6 4. e3 e6 From Slav opening the game now transpose into a Semi-Slav.

5. Bd3 dxc4 6. Bxc4 b5 7. Bd3 Bb7 8. O-O Nbd7 9. e4  Be7 10. Bg5 10. Nc3 b4 11. e5 bxc3 12. exf6 Bxf6 13. bxc3 c5

10... h6 11. Bxf6 Bxf6 Black has the pair of bishop 12. Qe2

12. e5 is another option Be7  13. Qe2  With the idea of Qe4 later after black castle 12... a6 12... e5   Is probably better 13. d5 cxd5 14. exd5 O-O 15. Bxb5 e4

13. a4 b4?!
I think this is unnesasary. Probably Ilham want to prevent Nc3 but white has other way to develop his knight for e.g Nbd2-Nb3 or Nbd2-Nc4. Against 13... e5!? Should be played for e.g 14. Nbd2 O-O 15. axb5 axb5

14. Nbd2  O-O 15. e5 Be7 16. Qe4 White force black`s to create weakness on his king side

16...g6  Of course 16... f5? 17. exf6 Rxf6 18. Qh7+ Kf7 19. Ne5+ Nxe5 20. dxe5 and black can resign immediately

17. Rac1  The backward pawn on c6 becomes a target

17... Kg7 18. Nb3 Ra7 18... Qc7 probably better

19. Qe3 White plan to play 20.d5 - attacking the rook on a7

19... Ra8 20. Be4 Rc8 21. a5 Rc7 22. Rc4 Qa8 23. Rfc1 Rfc8 23... Rd8 24. h4

24. Nc5! Just about time for black to push c5, white prevent it forever.

24...Nxc5 25. dxc5 Rd7 Now black`s queen and bishop on b7 is mere spectator.

26. Rxb4 Rcd8 27. h4 Rd1+ 28. Rxd1 Rxd1+ 29. Kh2 Rd7 30. g3 Qf8 31. Rc4 Qd8 32. b4 f5?
Black is desperate to find counterplay. but i think the position is already difficult to play for black. Probably better is to wait and see with 32... Qc7

33. exf6+ Bxf6 34. Bc2 Planning Qe4 attacking the g6 pawn.

34...Rd5 35. Kg2  Also strong is 35. Rg4 g5 36. Qe4 h5 37. Nxg5 Bxg5 38. Qh7+ Kf8 39. hxg5 Rxg5
40. Rf4+

35... Bc8 36. Rg4 g5 37. hxg5 37. Qe4

37... hxg5 38. Qe4 Rf5? 38... Kf8 39. Qg6 Qe7

39. Qxc6 Qd5 40. Qxd5  40. Qc7+ Qd7 (40... Kh6 41. Bxf5 exf5 42. Rxg5 Bxg5 43. Qxc8) 41. Qxd7+ Bxd7 42. Bxf5 exf5 43. Rxg5+ Bxg5 44. Nxg5 is winning also.

 40... Rxd5 41. Be4 Rd1 42. Bc6 e5 43. Re4 g4 44. Nxe5 Bf5 45. Rf4 Bxe5 46. Rxf5 Bf6 47. Bb7 1-0 Black resign.

Play might continue for e.g 47...Rb1 48. Bxa6 Rxb4 49. c6 Bd8 50. Rd5 Bc7 51. Rd7+

3rd DATCC Team League - Round 1 - My Game

In the first round of the 3rd DATCC Team League held last Wednesday, i decide to play on board 2 for my team - Nusa Mahkota Chess Club  against a new team- Gung Ho. Actually this is the reason why i did not show other players games or positions in my report  for round 1. This is  because i had to concentrate on  my own game.

Pity to Andrew Ooi who was checkmated on move 10 by Kaushal Khandahar. Andrew was playing and at the same time busying taking photos to make sure his always `hungry` blog follower and visitors  enjoy reading and watching  in their house (perhaps with a bottle of coke and chip ) for  the first round report.

However  in my case, i should have thanks  my opponent - Ismail Abdul Rahman who turn up late because  it gave me  chance  to snap a few photos during the early stage of the first round. Click here for the photos.

Another problems of playing is i can`t observe other games too  much because i`m afraid it will effect  my own game. So, if  you don`t mind, please enjoyed my `piece of crap` below :-

Ismail Abdul Rahman vs Hairul  Abdul Hamid
3rd DATCC Team League, Round 1, 24.3.2010

1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 My opponent choose the Scotch.3...exd4

4. Bc4 ...and he choose The Scotch Gambit variation.. Fortunately, i myself have play this opening  quite a number of  times before in my online and friendly blitz games so i was quite familiar with this opening .
4... Nf6 5. e5 Ne4 My opponent was quite shock with this move, may be he have`not seen it before.
Actually it was a playable line beside the main line 5...d5.

6. Nbd2 If   6. O-O d5 7. Bb5  (7. exd6 Nxd6) Or if white choose 6. Qe2 then 6...Nc5

6... d5 7. Bb5 Bc5 8. O-O O-O 9. Nxe4? White voluntalry gave black a strong center. 9. Re1  is better.

9... dxe4 10. Ng5 Bf5 11. Bxc6  If 11. g4  then  Bg6 12. e6 Ne5 13. exf7+ Bxf7  (13... Nxf7?! 14. Bc4 )

11... bxc6 12. Re1 12. h4 h6 13. g4 Bg6 with advantage for white

12... Qd5 Black`s is simply a pawn up and is ahead in development.  White also have the  double bishop.

Yours truly (left) waiting for Ismail`s 13th move 13.g4

13. g4!? White have to do something active , if not black`s superior position will cash in 13...Bg6 14. Bf4 f6

15. c4!?

A practical try for white.  15. exf6 also an option however black still have the upperhand for e.g  Rxf6 16. Nh3 Raf8 17. Bg3 Rf3

15... Qxc4 15... fxg5?  After the game, Ilhamuddin and i analysed this possibility and concluded that black`s has a good compensation however after checking with Fritzy...the monster show that the sacrifice is doom after  16. cxd5 Rxf4 17.Rc1 Bb6 18. Rxc6 d3 19. Rxb6! White gave back the material and it`s depend on black how to maintain the initiative 19... axb6 :   My opponent suggest a better move which i miss during the game 15...dxc3! winning 16. Qxd5+ cxd5 17. Ne6 (17. exf6 cxb2! 18. Rab1 Rxf6 19. Be3 d4) 17... cxb2 18. Rab1 e3!

16. Nxe4 Bb4 probably 16... fxe5 is  better  for e.g  17. Bxe5 (17. Rc1 Qxa2 18. Bxe5 Bb6 19. Bxd4 Bxe4 20. Rxe4 Rad8) 17... Bb4 18. Qa4

17. Nd2 Qd5 18. e6 Rfe8 19. Qb3 Qxb3 20. axb3 20. Nxb3 Bxe1 21. Rxe1 Rad8

20... Re7 21. Ra6 Be8  Fritz suggest a better move 21... Bd3! 22. Ra4 (22. Rxc6 g5! 23. Bxc7 (
23. Bg3? Bxd2) 22... c5 23. g5
a6 and black`s rook on a8 is free to move to e8 to attack white`s e6 pawn.

22. Re4? c5 23. Nc4 Bb5 24. Ra1 a5  i miss a better move 24... Bc6! 25. Re2 Bf3 26. Rc2 Bxg4
and black pawn on e6 will drop

25. Bd2 Bxc4?! 25... Rae8 !?  makes it even easier for Black 26. Bxb4 axb4 27. Ra5 Bc6 28. Re1 Rxe6 29. Rf1 (29. Rxe6 Rxe6 30. Rxc5 Re1# checkmate) 29... Bd5 30. Rxc5 c6

26. Bxb4 Rxe6 27. Rxe6 Bxe6 28. Bxc5 d3 29. Be3 Bxb3

29... Bxg4!? is also good because white`s panwn stucture is seriously damage.

30. Kf1 a4 31. Ke1 Kf7?! 31... Bc2! 32. Kd2 Rb8 33. Ra2  and white`s rook will be tight down defending the b2 pawn Kf7 34. f3 Ke6 35. Kc3 c5 follow by 36...Kd5

32. Kd2 Rd8 33. Re1 Bc2 33... Rd5!? 34. Bf4 c6 35. Re4

34. Bc5

34...Re8? 34... Rd7! or  34... Rd7 35. f4 . I know that a different color bishop always lead to a draw but because of my two pawn advantage, i voluntarily offer an exchange of rook which my opponent duly accept. This prove to be a wrong decision by me because even with a two pawns advantage, it does not guarantee a win in this kind of endings..

35. Rxe8  Kxe8 A different color bishop endings has occurred 36. Ke3 Kd7 37. Bf8 g6 38. Bb4 Ke6 39. Kd4 39. f4 c6

39... h6 39... c5+ 40. Kxc5 Ke5 41. Bd2

40. Bd2 h5 41. g5 fxg5 42. Bxg5 Kf5 43. h4 Kg4 44. Ke3 c5 45. Kd2 Kf3 46. Be7 Kxf2 47. Bxc5+ Kg3 48. Be7 1/2-1/2
