From Hairulov.

Below is Najib Wahab comment about the tournament:-

A total of 108 players participated in the DATCC Maverick Rapid Chess weekender series for 2011 surpassing the number of 92 registered in the Renegade event which was conducted late last month. The number of strong players turning up for the event is seen as a good omen for chess, promising a better and more vibrant future that is soon to come. Led by IM Mas Hafizul, Uzbek Madjidov Jasur and Philippines Ian Udani, this has been one of the strongest weekend event in the recent years influence by the upcoming NAG event, National Closed event and MSS event which are nearing very soon. It was clearly a “sparring” ground for aspiring players gunning for a good showing in the upcoming major events mentioned.

DATCC has been gaining a lot of support since being taken over by a new management earlier this year and the presence of IM Mas Hafizul in this weekend event are additional contributing factors that has made this event a huge success. Riding on the success of Renegade which pulled 92 players, Maverick event with 108 players is the single largest event conducted by DATCC since the center started. The biggest crowd for DATCC was 119 players back in January when Stonemaster did its “1 Malaysia” event.

DATCC would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the players (especially to IM Mas), supporters, bloggers, writers, parents, teachers, officials (especially IM/IA Giam Choo Kwee) for all the support and assistance that ALL OF YOU have given in making this event a huge success. Thank you everyone.

The next weekender series is planned for May 2011 – be on the lookout for our next successful outing!

Thanks again everyone!!!

Maverick is going to be legendary....

From Najib Wahab.....

Its going to be LEGENDARY! Maverick hitting 105 players.....

Despite my appeal, it seems that the players registering for the Maverick Rapid event continue to climb and 2 days before the event date, the number of players is now at 105 players. With many strong players wanting to play in the event, the only thing to do is to continue accepting entries. And to be a part of a "revolution" (considering that this is the "Maverick" event) where good players are beginning to come to the fore, DATCC is proud to be a part of this great development! To quote Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) from the TV sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" - "Its going to be legendary!"

The latest additions are former National Champion Zarul Shazwan with brother Zarul Shafiq and sister Amira. Some of the other notable players are Malaysia's top player IM Mas Hafizul and current Junior Champion Lim Zhuo Ren. Also playing are another former National Champion Kamalariffin Wahiduddin, Renegade Champion Wong Jian Wen, National Junior players siblings Mohd Nabil, WCM Nur Nabila and WFM Nur Najiha, National Junior players Mohd Izz Saifuddin, UIA leading player Ahmad Fadzil Nayan, and some of Malaysias top players in Cheah Cheok Fung, Kamaluddin Yusof, Nor Ilhamuddin and Mohd Saprin Sabri. Up and coming rising stars siblings Subramanian and Nithyalakshmi, and Puteri Munajjah (and brothers Syakir and Irfan) together with Camilia Johari and Amier Hamzah have also booked their places.

As a gentle reminder, players who are yet to pay for the event are advised to show up before 9:30am to complete the payment and registration as round 1 will start at exactly 10:00am.

School children (17 years and below) are advised to provide their full name and complete school name in order for the organizer to prepare their "Certificate of Participation" which will be given to to them at the end of the event.

National Closed Chess Championship 2011 UPDATE

Najib Abdul Wahab has send me an updated noted on the coming National Closed Chess Championship 2011:-

Update 8.54 AM

The number of players registering for the National Closed increased rapidly over the last 24 hours with the number of players for the Open section hitting 75 players and the Women section climbing to 22 players.

Penang sent in 11 players for the event (9 for the Open section and 2 for the Women) followed by Kelantan and Pahang with 3 players each, and Sarawak with a single representative. Both the winners of last year National Junior event, Lim Zhuo Ren and Alia Anin Azwa Bakri have registered for the event, including reigning Women Champion, Fong Mi Yen.

For the Open section, the top seeded player is currently Loo Swee Loong of Penang followed by Mohd Saprin Sabri and Yeoh Li Tian. In the Women section, WFM Ali Azwa Anin Bakri leads the pack followed by WCM Fong Mi Yen and WCM Nur Nabila Azman Hisham.

With capacity for the National Closed is limited to 120 seats, there are only 21 seats left to be filled. With some states still waiting for the 1st March deadline to register, and those who are rated 2200 and above who are waiting until 9th of March to confirm their participation, the door might close much earlier as soon as the number of players hit the ceiling of 120.

Some of those who have preregistered but have not made the necessary payment, are advised to complete the payment soon or contact the organizer for extension failing which, their names may be canceled to allow for other players to take part.

Update 11.34 AM

Attached is the “almost” FINAL list of players for the National Closed 2011. Although the are 7 seats left for the event, further application for entry shall be placed on a waiting list, pending approval for entry from the organizers. The main criteria that the organizer will look at to approve the entry shall be based on the applicants FIDE rating strength. Whilst the organizer can make concession to increase the number of players playing to exceed 120, with the early bird timeline ended yesterday, the number of participants are not expected to increase drastically within the next few days.

Players who have pre-registered but has not made the necessary payment are advised to do so within the next 24 hours after which, their names shall be considered for deletion and replaced by the new applicants/entries. As a rule of thumb, players who do not have a FIDE rating points shall be the first group of players to be deleted.

The total number of players for the Open Section currently stands at 81 players (it was 94 players last year) and for the Women section, 32 players have registered for the event (it was 44 players last year).

For further information or clarification, or if you find that your name has been listed in err, please contact Najib Wahab at +6016 338 2542 ornajib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com.

List of Players for NCC Open and Women - as of 19th February

Najib Abdul Wahab has released the  updated list of players for the 2011 National Closed Chess Championship  (Open) and (Women) section as of 19th February.

The Open section saw 51 players  registered so far and  12 have registered in  the women section. The highest rated player in  the open section is Loo Swee Leong (2141) while Foo Min Yen (1890) -   the defending champion is the highest rated player  in the women section.

Among notable players in the open section is our GM hope - Yeoh Li Tian who turn 12 this year. Will he shine in this tournament and will he replicate the success of Bangladesh former prodigy - GM Niaz Murshed who tied for first place in Bangladesh National Chess Championship when he was 12 years old? If we still remember - Li Tian did draw with the former chess prodigy at KL Open last year.

Famous chess blogger - Andrew Ooi has created a blog for this year National Closed Chess Championship and i have accepted his invitation to contribute in the blog.

New Kids On The Blog!

The title of this post is not accurate. I try to use the name of the famous boy band  in the 90's -  New Kids On The Block (NKID) which create  sensation in the 90's. Kind of  The Beatles  in the 60's.

Actually this post is about  a new chess blog titled The Chess Connections  who  made it maiden appearance in blog world last Tuesday.
Najib (Standing in the center) in his element.

The author of the blog is Najib Abdul Wahab. He is not a 'kid' in local chess community. He is an experienced chess event organizer, arbiter and  chess player. He now runs the famous Dato Athur Tan Chess Centre (DATCC) in Kuala Lumpur.

About 20 years  back which is when I start following local chess development, I noticed that Najib  is already there. If I'm not mistaken, in 1995 he and a few chess enthusiast  produce the first local chess magazine called - Majalah Catur. Najib writes a couple of  articles in the magazine.

Comparing my gray hairs with Najib, I can safely estimated that he has involved in local chess development for at least 30 years although Najib can claimed that he has a slightly younger wife then me :)

So far he has post three articles in his blog and two is about the selection process. I highly recommend his blog to chess lovers especially local chess community.

Highly Recommended!

Kirsan-Karpov : There is no permanent friends and permanent enemies!

On February 12, in Moscow, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with the former World Chess Champion, FIDE Ambassador to international organizations - Anatoly Karpov. The president and the ambassador discussed at the meeting the outcome of negotiations between FIDE leadership and the heads of international organizations, UNESCO, as well as the implementation of FIDE programme "Chess in Schools. Click here for the full news.

For non chess player,  the photo above may look like a reunion between  good friends that have not meet for years. However, only chess community knows that for about 9 months before the 2010 FIDE election, both Karpov's and Kirsan's team fight vigioursly against each other. The election however was  eventually  won by the incumbent - Kirsan Ilyumzhinov..

There's a famous quote - In politic, there is no permanent friends and permanent enemies!

How to beat IM Mashafizul for dummies !?

DATCC's blog mentioned that Malaysian no.1 player - IM Mashafizul has registered and will play in the coming DATCC Maverick Rapid Chess Weekend which will be held on 27th February 2011 (Sunday) at DATCC.

It's have been quite sometimes since Malaysian top 5 players playing in the rapid weekender tournament so to have this rare opportunity to play against the no.1 is a chance for lesser mortal like me to play and bite the bullet against the very best!

However i will not play at the Maverick but i will come during the tournament to snap some photos and hopefully get some games and results to be posted in this blog.

For lesser mortals {read patzers or dummies  :) } who doesn't have a single clue about how to beat IM Mashafizul (photo left), this is my tips - click here

There are lots of Mas's games that i (with Fritz/Rybka) have annotated and hopefully this will help. It's not like , say ....   How To Beat IM Mashafizul For Dummies book but i think it will help. The Dummies books is actually an extensive series of instructional / reference books which are intended to present non-intimidating guides for readers new to the various topics covered.

To my friend Mas, i hope you don't mind. I surely confidence that your vast experienced, knowledge and skill is still much superior then the weekenders. My advice to you is to play openings you never played before !?

Le Quang Liem demolish Kamsky!

Vietnam top player –  Le Quang Liem (photo right) made a great upset in round 4, Aeroflat Open 2011 after beating  ex-FIDE World Champion – Gata Kamsky (photo left) in 27 move!

Gata is the recent US Champion. He is a  super strong GM who have beat World Champion like Kasparov, Karpov, Anand and Topalov. Gata won the 2007 World Cup champion and qualified to play in the Candidate Quartefinal against Veselin Topalov on April 2011. The candidate is a tournament to determine the challenger for the World Chess Championship 2012.

Surprisingly, top chess site like chessbase.com  and chessvibes.com  failed o annotated his victory against Kamsky so i decide to ask my ‘good friend’ – Mr. Fritz to help me to annotated  the beauty of the game. Take note the beauty of a piece sacrifice on move 16th.

Chess Column in Selangor Times!

Image from gilachess.blog
As a chess player, i'm glad to hear that a chess column will make a permanent feature ( every two weeks) in a local newspaper - Selangor Times. The author of the column is FM Peter Long. He has previously  write chess  columns in major national newspapers.

Peter is two time National Junior Champion,  Malaysian Champion in 1986. He is an experienced chess player/trainer/chess event organizer/arbiter and has served as Executive Secretary of the Malaysian Chess Federation. Peter is currently the Director of the Polgar Chess University in Asia.

The chess column will appear every two weeks but unfortunately, the paper’s web site isn’t up yet so anyone interested to read it  have to get the hard copy. Andrew Ooi mentioned in his blog that the newspaper is available for free and can be obtained from malls, LRT stations and 7-eleven outlets.(probably in Selangor and KL only?).

Below is excerpt from the ballad of chess.

The BALLAD OF CHESS tells us the story of how a game of chess is played.

It is a game
Of strategy and skill,
Fight all the kinsmen,
As 'king' rivals 'kings.'

A game on the sixty-four
Black-and white equal squares
