Swindle blues

Sabahan player - Masrin Erowan had a lucky moment when he managed to swindle a losing position against National Junior player - Mark Siew Kit Tze in the recently conclude - National Closed Championship.

Masrin Erowan - Mark Siew Kit Tze
Round 6, National Closed, 18.3.2011

White to move

Below is the important stage in the game. White is threatening to destroy black's defense with fxg6 while black is threatening Nf3+.

 27. fxg6?!  White mixed up the move order. He should have play 27. Qf4 first before playing fxg6. Now black will get white's queen after...

27... Nf3+ Looking at his face during the game, i believe Masrin had commit a mistake.

28. Qxf3 White will simply lost a piece if he choose to move his king  for e.g 28.Kg2 or 28.Kh1 will be answer with 28...Nxd4 so white decide to sac his queen to complicate matters.

28...Bxf3 29. gxf7+ Kxf7 30. Rxf3+  Black has managed to capture white's queen but the game is far from over. White pieces is all in active position.

30... Kg8 31. Nd5 Masrin told me after the game that he think he had a good compensation here.

31....Kg7?  Actually 31... Kh8  will give black the advantage. Play might continue 32. Rh3 Rcd8! 33.Rxh5+ Kg7 and now white bishop on e3 and knight on d5 is in danger.   32. Nf6

32...h4?? This is a serious  blunder. 32... Rxe3 giving back some material  or 32... Re7 and the game is still unclear.

33. Rd7+ Now black is clearly lost.

33... Kf8 33... Kg6 is no good for e.g  34. Nxe8 Rxe8 35. Rf6+ Kh5 36. Rh7+ Kg4 37. Rf4+ Kxg5 38. Rfxh4+ Kg6 39. R4h6+ Kf5 40. Rh5+ Ke4 41. Rxa5 win

34. Ng4+ 34.g6 threatening 35.g7++ checkmate is stronger but white is winning anyway.

34...Kg8 35. Nh6+ Kh8 36. Bd4+ Re5 36... Qe5  cannot change what is in store for  37. Rf8+ Mate attack 37... Rxf8 38. Bxe5+ Rf6 39. Bxf6#

37. Bxe5+ 1-0 Black resign because he will lost the queen and the game after 37. ... Qxe5 38. Nf7+ Kg8 39. Nxe5

Round 5 : NM Edward Lee - IM Jimmy Liew : 1-0

NM Edward Lee beat top seed - IM Jimmy Liew in round 5, National  Closed which was yesterday. This is Jimmy  first lost against the juniors in this tournament. Although by age, Edward is still a junior, he can actually be considered as a senior because of his National Master title. He has also played with Jimmy  at  the 2008 Dresden, Olympiad.

One of my friend told that Jimmy is showing a good example by particapting in this tournament. He is willing to risk his rating -2302 . Second seed - NM Edward Lee is 128 points less then him!

NM Edward Lee - IM Jimmy Liew
National Closed 2011, Round 5, 17.3.2011

Analysed by centaur (Hairulov+Fritz)
1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 cxd4 6. bxc3 Is the main line but Jimmy must have preapred this sideline.

6. axb4 dxc3 7. bxc3 My friend Rizal Ahmad Kamal said he prefer the more aggresive 7. Qg4

7... Qc7 8. Nf3 Ne7  9. Qd4 Theory recomend 9. Bd3 giving the c3 pawn for development. 9... Qxc3+ 10. Bd2 Qc7

9... Nbc6 10. Qc5 b6 11. Qd6

11...Qxd6 12. exd6 This pawn looks weak but actually it did discoordinated black pieces.

12... Ng6 13.h4 O-O Maybe black doesn't need to castle king side. Alternative is 13...Kd7 14. h5 Nge5 15. Bf4 Nxf3+ 16. gxf3 e5 17. Be3 Bb7 (17... Kxd6 ? 18. Bxb6)

14. Bb5 Bd7 15. Bxc6 Bxc6 16. h5 Nh8 Maybe this knight did' not wish to come here.

17. h6!

17...g6 Now it is more difficult for black to manuever the knight on h8.

18. Ne5 Bb5 19. Ng4 f6 20. f4?! 20. Rh3 f5 21. Ne5 Nf7 $11 22. Bf4 Rfd8 23. Nxf7 Kxf7

20... Bd7? Black can win the d6 pawn with 20... f5! 21. Ne5 Rfd8

21. Bb2 e5 22. Ne3 Be6? 23. fxe5 fxe5 23... Nf7 24. O-O-O

24. Rd1 24. O-O-O! is also strong

24... Nf7  25. Nxd5 Nxd6?  I think this is the crucial mistake. 25... Bxd5 would allow Black to play on 26. Rxd5 Rac8

26. Nc7! Now black will lose material. 26...Nc4 27. Nxa8 27. Nxe6! is stronger. 27...Nxb2 ( 27... Rf6 28. Ng5 Nxb2 29. Rd7!) 28. Rb1  Rf6 29. Nc7 Rc8 30. Nd5 Rf7 ( 30... Rd6?? 31. Ne7+) 31. Rxb2

27... Nxb2 27... Rxa8  probably offere more resistnace. For e.g 28. Bc1 $14 Bg4 29. Rd3 Bf5  and black is threatening to take the c2 pawn.

28. Rd6 Bf5 29. Nc7 Nc4 30. Rd5 Rc8 31. Nb5 Be6 32. Rd3 32. Rd1 Ne3 33. Rd6

32... e4? 32... Bf5 is better 33. Nd6 Nxd6 34. Rxd6 Kf7

33. Rd4 e3 34. Ke2 34. Rf1 keeps an even firmer grip  34...Bf5 35. Nxa7 Ra8 36. Rxc4 Rxa7

34... Ne5?  34... a6 35. Nd6 Nxd6 36. Rxd6

35. Re4 Bg4+ 35... Bc4+  will be a answer with 36. Kxe3 Ng4+ 37. Rxg4 Bxb5 38. Kd2

36. Kxe3 Nc4+ 37. Kf4 Bd7 38. Nd4 Kf7 39. Rhe1 Kf6 40. Re7 Rd8 40... g5+  cannot change destiny 41. Kg3 Rd8 42. Rg7

41. Rxh7 41. Nf3  threatening 42.Ng5 and 43.Rf7++ checkmate is stronger.

41... g5+ 42. Kg3 Nd6 43. Rhe7 a5 44. h7 Nf7 45. bxa5 bxa5 46. R7e3 46. Nc6 seems even better 46...Bxc6 47. R1e6+ Kg7 48. Rxc6

46... Rh8 47. Rf1+ Kg6 48. Re7 Be8 49. Re6+ Kg7 50. Nf5+ The end is near.

50...Kf8 51. Nd6! Black resign. because after 51. Nd6 Kg7 52. Nxe8+ 1-0

Round 3 : Nor Ilhamuddin - Yeoh Li Tian : 0-1

Nor Ilhamuddin - Yeoh Li Tian
National Closed, Round 3, 17.3.2011

Analysed by Centaur (Hairulov+Fritz)

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. f3

White play ala Blackmar Diemer Gambit. He sac a pawn for quick development. 4...exf3 5. Nxf3 Nf6 6. Bd3 Bg4 7. Be3 Theory recommend 7. O-O Bxf3 8. Qxf3 Qxd4+ 9. Be3 White sac two pawns for initiative and development. 7... e6 8. O-O Be7 9. Qe1 Bh5?! With hindsight, this move looks dubious because after 10. Qh4 Bxf3 Probably Li Tian realised that his original  plan to play 10... Bg6 is not possible because of 11. Bxg6 fxg6  black defense is seriously weaken. (11...hxg6?? 12. Qxh8+) Another normal option - 10...0-0 will be answered with an interesting combination 11. Bxh7+!? Kxh7 12. g4 and white will regain the piece with strong initiative. 11. Rxf3 Nd5 12. Qg3 Nxe3 13. Qxg7 Of course 13. Rxe3? will be a mistake because black solve his problem with 13...Qxd4 14. Kh1 g6 13...Rf8

Round 2 : Looi Xin Hao - Edward Lee : 0-1

Looi, Xin Hao - NM Edward Lee, Kim Han
National Closed 2011, Round 2, 16.3.2011

Analysed by Centaur (Hairulov+Fritz)

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. f3 O-O 6. Nge2 c6 7. Be3 a6 8. a4 a5 9. g4!?

White shows that he is in aggressive mood. He will push his kingside pawns towards black's kingside - ala Sicilian Dragon Yugoslav Attack.9... Na6 10. Ng3 Nb4 A strategic square for black's knight. Now white have to think twice if he want  to castle queenside. 11. Qd2 e5 12. d5 Qe7 13. Be2 Nd7 14. h4 Nc5 15. Ra3

Is she Mrs. Topalov ?

As we already know, former World Champion - Veselin Topalov has married last year. However there's no coverage about the wedding accept that few comments in the net from his manager - Silvio Danailov about Veselin performance ...(chess performance of course :)) ... drop after his marriage.

Danailov, mentioned in an  interview last year  that Topalov married and was “enjoying life a little bit,” adding, “He is not motivated to play tournaments right now.”

In the recent SuperGM tournament - Amber, Topalov was spot with a beautiful lady and i belief  the lady is his wife. I did some googling and found that his wife is a Spanish name Christina.

LIM CHONG MEMORIAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2011

In recognition of Lim Chong  vast contributions to Malaysian chess, the Lim Chong Memorial Chess Championship will be held at the DATCC in Wilayah Kompleks on March 27th. Read the full article at NST.com.my here

I have always admire Lim Chong's  writing  in newspaper and in the net. As written in NST, i found that i had a similiar situation with him. Read the excerpt below:-

"Lim Chong's interest in chess was sparked in the early 1970s after coming across a book written by world champion Alexander Alekhine on his best games at the Klang public library. Realising he could not ever play like Alekhine, Lim Chong made his next best move -- writing about chess in The Malay Mail"

I think i had more or less,  the same situation with him. Realizing that i can't afford  to play competitive chess anymore due to job and family commitment, i decide to share about chess related things trough my blog.  As a tribute to Lim Chong, i have registered to play in the tournament. See you there!

DATE : 27th March 2011 (Sunday)

TIME : 9.00 AM – 7.00 PM  (ROUND 1 AT 9.15AM )

FORMAT : 7 ROUND
