FIDE Arbiters Seminar

Below is information i received from Najib Wahab:-

Good news for aspiring chess officials and those who are keen to learn more about becoming chess arbiters and officials.

It is now confirmed that MCF will be organizing a FIDE Arbiter Seminar from 29th June until 4th July in Kuala Lumpur. This will be the first time MCF organizes an accredited FIDE Arbiter seminar in Malaysia since FIDE passed a ruling where potential Arbiters are required to attend and pass an Arbiter Seminar before they can be recognized as a FIDE Arbiter, and FIDE International Arbiter. The last time MCF organized such a seminar was in 1994 during the Asian Cities Chess Championship held in Kuala Lumpur.

Participants who completed the course and pass the exam will have completed one of the more basic but crucial requirements towards earning the FIDE Arbiter title.

The facilitator for the FIDE Arbiter Seminar will be Mr. Ignatius Leong, one of FIDE most experienced International Arbiter and who is also the current FIDE Secretary General. Mr. Leong will be assisted by Mr. Bunawan, an International Arbiter from Indonesia.

The fees for the course is USD150 but those who registered via MCF state affiliates shall be given a 20% discount with a maximum of two persons per affiliate. Seats are limited and closing date for registration is 15th June 2011. Course material and handouts will be given to participants throughout the course duration.

For more information and clarification, please contact Najib Wahab at +6016 3382542 or write to him atnajib.wahab@chess-malaysia.com for clarification and information. Seminar brochure and registration forms can be downloaded here

How to beat Mokdern Defense by Fong Yit San

As everyone know, IM Mok Tze Meng is a loyal believer in the Modern Defense. I even call the opening The "Mokdern Defense" because Mok play this opening succesfully   and he seldom lost with it,  especially in local tourney. I

However, in  round 4 of the 2011 SEA Games Selection held yesterday, Mok unexpectedly lost to a junior player - Fong Yit San (photo right) .Yit San is showing rapid improvement recently. He qualified for this selection after ending in top 10  at the 2011 National Closed held last March.

Below is his victory over Mok:-

Fong Yit San - IM Mok Tze Meng

SEA Games Selection, Round 4, 24.4.2011

Analyzed by Centaur (Hairulov+Fritz)

1.e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 c6 4. Nf3 d5 5. h3 Nh6 6. Bf4 f6 7. Be2 O-O 8. O-O Nf7 9. Bh2 e6
Fritz opening book suggest 9... b6 10. Re1 Bb7 11. Bf1 Nd7

10. Re1 Nd7 11.Bf1 f5 12. exd5 exd5 13. Ne2 Re8 14. Nf4 Nf6 15. Nd3  White is concentrating on e5 outpost for his peices while black on e4 square.

15...Ne4 16. c3 Qb6 17. Qc2 Be6 18. Nfe5 Nxe5 19. Bxe5 Bxe5 20. Nxe5

20... f4? Maybe black should maintain his pawn on f5 to support his knight. Breaking the center with 20...c5 followed by Rac8 playing along the c-file is a good option.

21. Bd3 Bf5 22. Nf3 Nd6 23. Bxf5 Nxf5 24. Ne5 Kg7?

The f4 is vulnerable. Black should support it with 24... Qd8 followed by Qh4 and g5 later

25. Qd2 Now the f4 pawn is lost.

 25...Re7 26. Qxf4 Rf8 27. Nd3 Rfe8 28. b3  28. Re5!Looks stronger.

28... Qa5 29. Qd2 Nxd4? Probably Mok missed the next move.

 30. b4! Ne2+  31. Rxe2 Rxe2 32. Qxe2 32. bxa5?? will lost to  32...Rxd2 33. Nc5 Ree2

32... Rxe2 33. bxa5 Rc2  34. Rc1  34. Rb1 keeps an even firmer grip for e.g. 34... Rxc3 35. Rxb7+ Kf6 36.Nb4 winning

34... Rxa2 35. Rb1 Rxa5 36. Rxb7+ Kf6 37. Rc7 a6 38. Nb4 White should not be greedy by grabbing the h7 pawn because after 38. Rxh7?! Ra1+ 39. Kh2 Ra3 white's c-pawn will drop and it will be much harder for white to convert his advantage.

38... Ra1+ 39. Kh2 a5 40. Nxc6 a4  41. Nb4 41. Rxh7!? seems even better 41...Rc1 42. Nb4 Ke6 43.Ra7

41... Ke6 42. Rc5 a3 43. Rxd5 stronger is 43. Rc6+ Kd7 44. Ra6 And black's can't progress much.

43...Rc1 44. Rc5 Kd6 45. Rc6+ Kd7

46. Ra6 46. Kg3 bring on the king is better.

46... Rxc3 47. Nd5 Rb3 48. Nb6+ Kc6 49. Nc4+ Kb5 50. Rxa3

50...Kxc4 51. Rxb3 Kxb3 This endgame is totally lost for black because his king is too far away from
the action and white has an extra pawn.

52. Kg3 Kc4 53. Kf4 Kd3 53... Kd5 54. Kg5 and the h7 will drop.

54. g4 Ke2 55. f3 Kf2 56. h4 Kg2 57. h5 Kf2 58. hxg6 hxg6 59. g5

59...Ke2 60. Ke5 1-0 Black resign.

Round 1: Tan Jun Feng - NM Lim Zhou Ren

Tan Jun Feng - NM Lim Zhou Ren
SEA Games Selection,  Round 1, 22.4.2011

Analysed by Centaur (Hairulov+Fritz)

1. e4 d6 It's interesting to note that both IM Jimmy Liew and NM Lim Zhou Ren  reply 1.e4 with 1...d6 in their first round game.  Jimmy usually played The French but this time  he beat Sumant with 1...d6. A special preparation for this selection? - Opponents take note :)

2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 c6  4. Be3 It seems to early for white to play The English Attack Set-up or The Yugoslav Setup - ala Sicilian Dragon ( Be3-f3-Qd2) before black show his real intention. Maybe white can try a waiting move 4.f3 and if 4...Qb6 he can then play 5. Bc4  followed by 6.Bb3 and 7.Be3 without worrying about the b2 pawn.

Round 1 of the 2011 SEA Games selection kick off today!

The first round of the 2011 SEA Games selection will kick off today (7PM) at the DATCC.

The list of  players in the men section tournament looks  interesting. In the men section, we have four  IM’s,  two NMs and for untitled players. In term of age, we have 5 seniors players and 5 juniors players.  All the seniors players have played  in the Olympiad before.  Among the juniors, only Sumant have  experience playing in international tournaments abroad.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s have been more then 10 years since our country held a single round robin tournament for the top players. It will be interesting  to see our IMs – Mas, Jimmy, Mok and Yee Weng battle against each other in this  round robin tournament.  In 2009, we saw the  top players playing in the same tournament -  Malaysian Master which use the  knock out system. The tournament   was won by our numero uno – IM Mashafizul.

German Grandmaster Gustafsson Wins Thai Open Chess

German Grandmaster Jan Gustafsson has won the 2011 Thai Chess Open in Pattaya after finishing in a three-way tie for first place and winning the title on a tiebreaker.

Gustafsson, seeded third at the start of the tournament, finished equal on points with the top two seeds, Paco Vallejo of Spain and England's Nigel Short but was awarded the 11th Thai Open title because he had played tougher opposition. Short, who lost to Gustafsson in the critical game of the tournament, was awarded the runners-up cup. The three players shared 220,000 Baht in prize money.

In a dramatic final day of play, Short, 45, seemed to have the most difficult task but he smoothly outplayed Indian Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte.

Both Gustafsson, 31, and Vallejo, 28, were required to play tricky endgames against Norwegian youngster Kjetil Stokke and Bangladeshi veteran Niaz Murshed but both outplayed their opponents to reach the tie for first.

Sunday's final round of Thailand's largest and strongest open tournament was a grim one for local players with the leading Thai performer Wisawat Teerapabpaisit missing a chance to reach sixth place after losing to Indian Grandmaster Jha Sriram.

2011 Thai Open Final scores

1. Gustafsson, Short, Vallejo 7.5 points
4. Voigt, Yang 7
6. Hansen, Palit, Sriram, Saptarshi, Illingworth 6.5

Gustafsson Downs Leader in Thai Open Chess

German Grandmaster - Jan Gustafsson threw the 2011 Thai Chess Open in Pattaya wide open by defeating tournament leader Nigel Short of England in the seventh round.

With two rounds of Thailand's richest tournament to play, Gustafsson, seeded third, now shares the lead with top seed Paco Vallejo and the two will meet in a much-awaited penultimate round encounter on Saturday.
Gustafsson was pleased with his win over the former world title challenger but was unsure of the turning point in the game; "I think he didn't have time for his [slow plan from moves 17-20]. His piece sacrifice at the end [isn't great] but I already have strong threats."

Vallejo joined Gustafsson at the top of the standings with a tough win over Chinese International Master Yang Kaiqi, with Short and 4 other players half a point off the pace.

However 2010 Thai Open Champion - Sune Berg Hansen is not among them and has no chance of retining his titled after the Danish Grandmaster was forced to lower his colours to unfancied Dutchman - Pieter Hopman.

Thailand's top player Wisuwat Teerapabpaisit moved into prizemoney contention with an upset win over Russian International Master Alexey Romanov. Teerapabpaisit is now only a point behind the two leaders. 15-year-old Warot Kananub also continued to impress and retains chances for his first International Master result.

The Thai Open, with a prize fund of 500,000 Baht, is being played at the luxury Dusit Thani Resort and continues until Sunday, with round 8 beginning at 2pm local time on Saturday. Games may be followed live via http://bangkokchess.com/  with results on http://www.chess-results.com/fed.aspx?lan=1&fed=THA.

Short Takes Clear Lead at Thai Chess Open

GM Zaw Win Lay vs GM Nigel Short (right).

Legendary English Grandmaster Nigel Short has become the clear leader of the 2011 Thai Chess Open in Pattaya after a hard-fought victory over Burma's only Grandmaster, Zaw Win Lay.

Second-seeded Short moved clear of the field after his main rival, Spain's Paco Vallejo, was held to a draw by Abhijit Kunte, the highest raned of the 21-strong Indian contingent in Pattaya. Vallejo now sits in a pack of five players half a point behind Short.

Zaw gained plenty of time in the opening by using the Short system against its inventor, but once both players became short of time at around move 30, the Englishman took control, winning a piece and the game in 47 moves.

Short, 47, finished third in the 2009 Thai Open and second in 2010, but the veteran English star may be believing that 2011 will be his year to win Thailand's most prestigious tournament.

Local fans were deflated as their two best performers in the Open, Jiripak Pitirojirathon and 15-year-old Warot Kananub both suffered defeats, when a victory would have placed them only a point behind Short.

The Thai Open, with a first prize of 100,000 Baht, is being played at the Dusit Thani Resort and continues until Sunday, with round 7 beginning at 2pm local time on Friday.

Top Seeds Struggle at Thai Open

IM Atanu Lahiri draw with GM Jan Gustafsson (right) in round 3. Photo from Thai Open Press Office

After a day of upsets, only 5 players, and only 2 of thafone top 10 seeds, have survived the first three rounds of the 2011 Thai Open in Pattaya unscathed.
Following a smooth ride in the first round, the 10 participating Grandmasters found life much tougher in Tuesday's second and third rounds.
In round 2 the fourth fifth and sixth seeds all failed to win. Defending 2010 Thai Open Champion Sune Berg Hansen from Denmark was held to a draw by unfancied Singapore teenager Jarred Neubronner, while Indian GMs Abhijit Kunte and Tejas Bakre were also held to draws.

In the third round, third seed Jan Gustafsson of Germany struggled to draw with Indian International Master Atanu Lahiri while his countryman, Gerhand Schebler was also held, by Australia's Max Illingworth.

Tournament favourites Paco Vallejo and Nigel Short both achieved maximum 3/3 scores with fine attacking wins in the third round. They are joined in the lead by two Woman Grandmasters, Swathi Ghane of India and Alina l'Ami of Romania, who scored a upset wins over IMs Yang Kaiqi and Roy Saptarshi respectively, as well as Burmese Grandmaster Zaw Win Lay.

The Thai Open, with a first prize of 100,000 Baht, is being played at the luxurious Dusit Thani Resort and continues until Sunday, with admission for spectators gratis. Games may be followed live via http://bangkokchess.com/ with results at chess-results.com

News about Larry Parr's dies at USCF Online

Two days ago I received an email from former USCF's  Excutive Director
Al Lawrence regarding the sad news about Larry Parr. I guess he
probably found the news about Larry  from my blog. He then asked me whether
he can get a verification  from someone about the news. I gave him Abdul
Hamid Majid email and they later correspond.

Later, Al Lawerence asked me if I got some photos of Larry and I gladly
send it to him. You can read his article about Larry at USCF Online . There's a photo of Larry at Dato' Arthur Tan Chess Center at the bottom of the article.  NM Yeoh Chin Seng and and his son – Yeoh Li Tian was also in the photo which was shot  during the closing ceremony of the 3rd DATCC Team Event last year.
