Happy Eid ul Fitri !
Hari Raya or Eid ul Fitri which will be celebrate tommorow (30th August 2011) is one of the significant celebrations for Muslims which marks the culmination of Ramadan, a month-long fasting period and a time for abstinence, reflection and worship.
This is also the time when Muslims working in the towns and cities make an exodus for their kampung or villages. This year, my family and I will celebrate it at my in laws house in Johor Bahru and after few days i will return to my hometown in Klang to visit my relative.
To all Muslim viewer, i wish you all Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir Batin and i ask for forgiveness in any of my wrong doing.

Defending - strategy
There is an old word saying "to attack is easier than to defend". It really makes sense in a psychological point of view since most of the players prefer to attack than to defend. In addition we are thought by our masters that the best method of defense is to counter attack. When a player start to attack, he knows what he wants and where the target is. On the other hand a defender must be
1. Alert
2. Calculate accurately
3. Stay calm
4. React accordingly
5. Find what the attacker wants
6. Know the consequences
7. Choose the correct path, etc
which make many chess players hate defending. In the diagram below, black is defending a very difficult position. Find the first correct move and tell us what is your plan? Black to move ..
Good luck!
... Luth Mikael
OK lets continue...
White is threatening a)Qxd5 b)BxB with the idea of Nfg5 and the deadly Qh5+ to follow and c)Qd3 with the idea of discovered check.
The only way to defend is 1..f6 with the idea to stop all the threats mentioned above. If 2.exf6 then black can take the pawn with his Knight and stops the attack on the king side.
1..f5 is an interesting try but may not be the best defense. After the correct 2.Qxd5 fxe4 white can make a draw with perpetual check on c4 and h4
Now that after 1..f6 white cannot play 2.exf6 as mentioned because Nxf6 but white can complicate the game further.

Friday morning - Strategy
In this position black has no real weaknesses. How do you proceed? Find a plan for white
ANSWER
There are two good moves here..
1st Method 1.f6
I think this is the most principle continuation. It clears the seventh rank for the white's rook and attacking the most obvious weakness in the black's camp g7.
There is nothing much that black can do other than 1..gxf6 and after 2.gxf6! black is force to take the pawn with the Knight leaving the square c7 unprotected. The white's Rook goes to c7 and later capture black's Bishop by force. The endgame is now in white's favor. The sample line is 1.f6 gxf6 2.gxf6 Nxf6 3.Rc7 Ne4 4.Rc8+ Kg7 5.Bf8+ Kxg6 6.RxB +-
Another good plan for white as highlighted by IM Jimmy Liew is 1.Bf8! (with the same idea attacking g7) Kxf8 2.Rh8+ Ke7 3.Rxa8
Black is loosing his grip on g7 which cost him the game as 3..Nd8 is well met by 4.f6+
See you next time.

Strategy
The position shown below is taken from fritz database. There are two types of win. Which one is yours? Draw your plan...
Luth Mikael
Answer
If you choose 1.Rc4 congratulations. This is the safest way to win this position and certainly the choice of Mr Houdini. The strategy consist of bringing the Bishop to d5 and try to advance the queen side pawn to b3 to tie down the white's rook. You must also try to exploit the weakness of h4 and the more advanced pawn on e5 to create as many weaknesses in the enemy camp.
The second method to win was the choice of the great Tal which involves an interesting sacrificial idea. 1.RxR when after BxR black goes on to kill the unprotected h4 pawn. The majesty continues his journey to the square g3. From this square, the king will help to attack f3 twice which makes this sacrifice possible and interesting. This is the main difference between the engine and the human brain. Human is full of fantasy and creativity while computers are full of trees and probabilities :) Till we meet again

World Junior, Round 3, 4.8.2011
Analyzed by Centaur (Hairulov+Houdini)
1.d4 d6 2. c4 e5 In my opinion, this move give white a chance to transpose the game into the most boring variation in the world...
3. dxe5 White can choose to 'play with the queen variation' with 3. Nf3 e4 4. Ng5 f5 White's knight look rather silly on g5 but it have a strong 'reverse gear' maneuver if black choose to harass it immediately for e.g 5. Nc3 h6 6. Nh3 g5 7. Ng1 The knight move 4 times to return to it initial square but on the other hand black has commit a serious weakness on his kingside! 3... dxe5 4. Qxd8+ Kxd8
